Linux Taiwan seeks Hardware and Bandwidth donations - Linux 台灣尋求硬體以及網路頻寬捐贈 Background ---------- There has been a group of unsung heroes devoted to the FLOSS (free/libre/open source software) movement from Taiwan in the past decade. Their contribution is recognized by the FLOSS international communities without publicity nor media coverage. GNU/Linux systems are gaining popularity and adoption by the Taiwanese Government and business in recent years. The critical elements attributed to the momentum are the promotion and education of the Anti-Piracy Acts of TICO (Taiwan Intellectual Property Office), the policy-making and implementation of MOEA IDB (The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industrial of Economic Affairs) and RDEC (The Research, Development and Evaluation Commission), and the GNU/Linux-embedded go-to-market strategy pursued by the Netbook vendors. The impact and significance of the contribution and services for the public interests from those selfless movers of the FLOSS movement in Taiwan sets the foundation for global collaboration to strengthen education and global learning. Their foundational work would have expanded benefits with strong support and participation from the Government and business sectors to create a vibrant environment to nourish human capacity on free source software development. Governance and Maintenance -------------------------- Built on the effort by the community, the user group of Linux in Taiwan is growing continuously. Volunteers provide many kinds of services for the community. The site (linux.org.tw) provides services and websites to our networked communities. In the past 8 years, the hardware of this site (linux.org.tw) has been sponsored by Software Liberty Association of Taiwan; the network bandwidth by Academia Sinica and operated by community volunteers. Needs ----- Upgrading the equipment to support our community's work is critical. All existing equipment has been acquired from 8 years ago. Furthermore, the hosting site for our community site needs to be determined. Due to a policy change of Academia Sinica, the machine was relocated from Academia Sinica Computer Center to Academia Sinica Institute of Information Science (IIS) Computer Center with the help of Software Liberty Association (SLAT). Most recently, due to further policy establishment, the IIS Computer Center can no long host servers operated by external parties. In order to provide a stable service for the community and avoid impact of development and communication by frequently services outage, the coordination team is calling for sponsorship of hardware, hosting and high-speed bandwidth. The resources will be used to support long-term services for Taiwan Linux user group and other related FLOSS projects in Taiwan. Requirement ----------- The team is looking for dedicated server and outgoing network bandwidth at least 100MBps, public IP address, and free access to the Internet. (It would be best if there is no firewall, bandwidth throttler or any other package filter in between.) Spec for ideal hardware are: Two recent processors 4G or up memory 1.5TB or up storage, or SATA RAID. It would be better the machine has spare RAID disk slot for extensible storage in the future. UPS and remote out of band management with full serial console access and remote power switch are pluses. About US -------- Linux Taiwan Community is a virtual group organized by community volunteers. The members are living all over Taiwan and overseas and are using the Internet to collaborate. Since being registered ten years ago, the domain name linux.org.tw has become the cradle of Linux related free and open source community projects. For example, CLE, the most successful project in Taiwan, also well-known in Asia, and the recently internationally well-known project, LXDE, which has been adapted by Fedora, Debian, Mandriva and Knoppix, are all conceived in this cradle.
